How to Scramble

To participate, follow the steps below:

1. Learn more about what happens in a Street Scramble.

We don't think you need to know much more than what's on our front page, but if you'd like to know more, click here to display more details in a separate window.

2. Team or solo? Foot or bike?

You may participate solo, or in a team of 2 to 5. If you want to participate in a team, you are responsible for putting together your own team. This is a great activity to enjoy with family or friends! There are separate divisions for foot (includes strollers and wheelchairs) and bike (includes skates, skateboards, and non-motorized scooters). We don't need to know your choices before event day.

3. Check out the fees. Preregister to save money.

Our standard fee is $20/person, but there are loads of special breaks for kids, students, older people, families, volunteers, and orienteers. Pre-registration is optional but saves money for most people. Visit our registration page for details. Each individual must register separately, even if you are on a team.

4. Read about rules, safety, and preparation.

Before event day, take ten minutes to read our Rules, Safety, and Preparation pages. These will help you know what to expect, and will also give you ideas about what to wear and bring.

5. Go Scramble.

The event day schedule is as follows:

  • Registration and check in: 8:30-9:30
  • Map issue: 9:30. This gives you a half hour to plan which checkpoints to visit and in what order.
  • Briefing: 9:50. We will go over rules and safety.
  • Start: 10:00
  • 90 minute finish and lunch: 11:30
  • 3 hour finish and lunch: 1:00

You don't have to decide ahead of time whether to Scramble for 90 minutes or 3 hours.

At 45 minutes after each finish, award ribbons are handed out to the top three individuals and/or teams in the following eight categories:

  • Women
  • Men
  • Mixed (men and women)
  • Junior (all team members under 18)
  • Veteran Men (average age of team 50+)
  • Veteran Women (average age of team 50+)
  • Mixed Veteran (average age of team 50+)
  • Family (at least one person 12/under on team)

Of course, awards are granted separately for the 90-minute and 3-hour time limits, and for foot and bike.

Can you bring your dog? Yes! Just be ready to tie your dog outside briefly for the very few checkpoints that are indoors.

South San Francisco Scavengers has been a very generous supporter of the Millbrae Street Scramble since the beginning. If you live in Millbrae, SSF, or Brisbane, you know how cool it is that you can just put your trash and recyclables out on the curb at night, and those guys come and take it away the next day! They're called the Scavengers because they've been separating out recyclables since their inception in 1914. How forward thinking is that?
